The woman who led Victoria and I into the house stands at the base of the stairs that lead out of the house, lazily leaning against the post.

“I see you’ve made it further than I thought you would. Too bad for you, this is as far as you go, vampire.” The woman says, the final word dripping with the venom of hatred.

“Let Victoria go, you can do whatever you want with me,” I say. The woman smirks,

“You really are a tamed one, aren’t you? I admit I thought the whole friendly, controlled, haven’t drank from a human in five hundred years bit was just an act, but you really are some sort of pacifist,” She shakes her head and then focuses her gaze back on me. “Instead of coming to rip me apart, you try to bargain for a human’s life, which is I suppose good for you, since you wouldn’t even have a chance to make it near me.” She grins as two glowing red eyes appear in the woods behind her and then a large white wolf appears at her side, moving as quickly and fluidly as a vampire. A hunterwolf. It’s presence confirms what I had already begun to suspect, we are in a vampire hunter’s house.

“Victoria, get back inside!” I shout, my voice betraying my panic. Victoria and I step backward through the door we just came through, and I slam it shut, locking it. Outside the woman shouts to us,

“Don’t worry we’ll be here all night! And if you don’t come out before then, well, the sunlight will surely get you,” She laughs just as a loud motor starts running. Above us, the ceiling begins to move, revealing a large sunroof above it.

“I’m too exhausted to fight a hunterwolf, but I won’t survive if the sun comes up.” I say, falling down on the ground to rest. “I believe you will have to use your magic.” I say looking over at Victoria, as my breath comes heavily. My whole body aches from the numerous injuries I have sustained, and I have lost so much blood that I am now only about as strong as a human, and a very tired one at that. I have not fought a hunterwolf in more than two centuries, but they are fearsome creatures. Even if I was not injured and exhausted I would struggle to defeat one, since it has been so long since I last fed, and longer still since I last had human blood.

“My what?” She asks, tilting her head sideways slightly in question, as if she’s trying to pretend she doesn’t know what I’m talking about. I’m surprised she thinks I’ll fall for it after she was burned by the witchbane.

“You needn't worry about using your magic in front of me. I have known what you are from the moment I first smelled your blood. I will not reveal you to a witch hunter.” I say.

“You know I’m what? Reveal me to a what?” She looks at me in bafflement.
